Construction Site Sanitation Requirements (OSHA)
Federal OSHA 1926.51 requirements explained in plain language.
OSHA Construction Sanitation Requirements (Plain Language)
OSHA standard 1926.51 spells out exactly what's required for sanitation on construction sites. Here's what you need to know β without the legal jargon.
Toilet Quantity (29 CFR 1926.51(c))
- 20 or fewer workers β 1 toilet
- 20β199 workers β 1 toilet + 1 urinal per 40 workers
- 200+ workers β 1 toilet + 1 urinal per 50 workers
Handwashing
OSHA requires "adequate" handwashing facilities. In practice, that means at least one fresh-water handwash station in the same cluster as your toilets. Hand sanitizer alone isn't compliant for sites where workers may handle hazardous materials.
Drinking Water (1926.51(a))
Potable water must be provided. While Briony doesn't supply potable water tanks, we work with several Fargo partners who do.
Cleanliness and Servicing
Toilets must be kept "in a clean and sanitary condition." For most sites, that means weekly servicing. For sites with 50+ workers or extended shifts, we recommend twice-weekly service.
Cold-Weather Sites
OSHA doesn't waive sanitation requirements in winter. We winterize units, use cold-weather deodorizer, and offer heated trailer options for the worst stretches.
Documentation
Keep your service tickets β they're your proof of compliance during an OSHA inspection. Briony provides a digital service log for every account.
